How a review is made

From first controller press to published verdict

Every piece follows the same slow, unglamorous routine. No embargo shortcuts, no rushed scores — just the process that keeps our verdicts honest.

  1. 01

    Hands on the controller

We buy every game with our own money and play it to credits — a minimum of 20 hours, with no early-access shortcuts or skipped side content.

  2. 02

    Notes in the sand

Every session gets logged: framerate dips, the dialogue that actually landed, and the boss that ruined our Tuesday night. Nothing goes off memory.

  3. 03

    The second playthrough

We replay the key sections on a different platform to check performance and accessibility before a single line of the review is published.

  4. 04

    Publish & reply

The piece goes live Thursdays at 9:00am ET, and we answer reader questions in the comments and Discord all weekend long.

What readers say

“Their Tidebreaker review talked me out of a CA$90 pre-order and into waiting for patch 1.4. Saved my wallet and my weekend.”

Every review uses a public 10-point rubric weighing gameplay, performance, accessibility, and value. We show the full breakdown at the bottom of each piece so you can see exactly why a game landed where it did.

No. We buy every game ourselves and never accept paid placements or embargoes that require positive coverage. Founders’ memberships and reader tips keep the lights on instead.

Flagship reviews publish every Thursday at 9:00am ET, with Indie Spotlights on Sundays. Speedrun guides drop whenever a route is fully verified — usually two or three times a month.
